D.R. Horton building 270-home tract north of Jerome’s Furniture

New development will feature a mix of single-family homes, duplexes and attached townhomes.

The long-vacant plot of land north of Jerome’s Furniture is being graded into pads for a new D.R. Horton housing tract, a 270-unit development that will feature a mix of single-family homes and duplexes.

The square footage of the units will range from 1,908 to 3,041, according to D.R. Horton’s website.

Before the banking crisis of 2008, the development plan for that 50-acre site called for a 7-acre shopping center called Plaza de Murrieta surrounded by 322 units of housing.

The recession that followed sapped funding for that project and threw into doubt the viability of the retail component but some remnants of its DNA remain, primarily the open space in the northeastern corner.

The new plan, which was put together by PDM Partners of Burbank, was approved a few years ago by the city. The development, which will feature a large central park, has been dubbed Santa Rosa Highlands in a nod to the nearby ecological reserve.

Pete Sayegh of D.R. Horton said in a text message that models could be ready by September.
